Skylake hard locks seeminly when IDLE / CStates ON

$

Myself and others have been struggling with a different hard lock problem with Skylake and we have ran out of options but to assume it is a CPU fault/issue.  Does anyone have any comments or feedback?

The long thread is over here, but I will summarise.  New Skylake Build Randomly Freezing/Crashing - Page 7 - windows 10 - Windows 10

Our systems hard lock randomly but appears on the most part to be when IDLE or next to IDLE.  The hardlock can come when playing video, browsing (reading) or mostly when not interacting at all.   Some (like myself) noted that they seem to occur more often if you are doing a large amount of disk IO (partition move for example or copying 40+ GB of data disk to disk).

Hard locks happen in either Windows (7,8,10) or Linux.

With CStates on, the crashes are often and usually within 10 minutes of IDLE.  With CStates disabled completely most find that the system remains "mainly" stable for days.  Generally, no one has reported locks when gaming or under high CPU load (so I do not think this is the Prime95 example but then, since compilers / drivers use the latest instructions (according to CPUID) I cant be sure).

The symptoms happen on many different manufacturers motherboards, RAM types and setups.  We have successfully removed or replaced all components and the only change that seems to make a difference is CPU for a few.  CStates off in the BIOS is absolutely a guarenteed way to stabilize significantly but not fix.

I changed CPU (after trying everything else) and find it now mostly stable with CStates ON. I must be clear that my system is 100% identical, CPU #1 crashes all the time and must have CStates off, CPU #2 does not crash so often even with CStates ON.    One may argue this is a problem with my PC, a fault, but with so many people having the exact same issues I cant believe it is a defect. And with Cstates/SpeedStep so specifically (a known new part of Skylakes architecture), I remain convinced that this is something real.

Others were not so lucky, a replacement CPU did not make the situation better.  Batches from different factories as well etc etc

My new CPU has hard locked but not when IDLE like the last one (not yet anyway).  Mine can lock when under full load, video transcoding, but not more than 1 in 10 sessions. Cstates ON seems equally stable on this CPU as OFF.

Thanks for any suggestions you can give.

Оперативная память: 2 х Kingston HyperX KHX2133C14/8G

Видеокарта: Asus ROG STRIX 1080

SSD: INTEL SSDSC2CT180A4, INTEL SSDSCKJW120H6

7700K Temperature - CPU PLL OC Voltage - Need an Intel response:

$
0
0

First I'll list my specs, just so everything is known:

CPU: 7700K @ 5GHz w/ 1.328 vCore

MOBO: MSI Z270 Gaming Pro Carbon

GPU: 970 GTX (upgrading, soon).

MEM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200MHz

COOLING: Corsair H100i V2 w/ pre-applied thermal paste

http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/3051401

Ok, so firstly these are the only things I have changed in BIOS:

CPU Clock: 50 (5GHZ)

EIST: Disabled

Extreme Memory Profile: Enabled

CPU Core Voltage: 1.325 (1.328V displaying in BIOS) - http://i.imgur.com/3W2CL4z.jpg

CPU SA Voltage: 1.200 (1.208V displaying in BIOS as shown in the image after Core Voltage) - This value was set to AUTO previously, and over 1.3V

CPU IO Voltage: 1.150 (1.160V displaying in BIOS as shown in the image after Core Voltage) - This value was set to AUTO previously, and over 1.3V

Now - originally that is all I had changed, and my temps were a little too high for my liking though.

So I reached out for help on a different forum called overclock, and a user recommended I change this setting below:

CPU PLL OC Voltage - It was set to AUTO, and he told me to change it to 1.150. My motherboard says default is 1.2, and I can use anywhere from 0.6 to 1.5 (that's what it says on the "HELP" on the right hand side).

After changing this setting, my temps dropped 10-15c. Now when gaming they only hit 65 maximum.

I was then told by two other users of the same forum that it is just the dts sensors reporting FALSE readings, or so they believe. Now, I find this strange as I can't imagine any bios setting would do such a thing without ANY documentation anywhere on the internet (I've been looking all day and seeking as much help as possible).

Now, my overclock is stable, or at least it is stable right now. With these current settings, I only ran a few stresses, x264 for over an hour, no crashes, gaming all day with no crashes. Obviously it could crash tomorrow, next week and so on but for now, we're good.

I am concerned however about these claims of it reporting FALSE temperatures since changing that setting off AUTO to 1.150.

Help would be very much appreciated, and/or some understanding of this setting. The only information I have found on it so far (which is old, and possibly false, also is here):

"CPU PLL Voltage Override (Overvoltage): What the Heck does it do? So I asked that question to an Intel Overclocking Engineer his explanation was roughly: We went through the BIOS settings trying to find setting that if changed could help overclock our CPUs further. We came across this setting. Think of the CPU PLL voltage as a voltage that is provided to the CPU, but then “clipped” down to an approximate voltage. No matter what that input is whether 1.3v or 1.9v it is clipped (hypothetically let’s say 800mv after clipping (he didn’t say how much)) that way other devices can use the PLL voltage and clip to what they need. The CPU PLL Overvoltage allows for less clipping of that voltage. It can also reduce the lifespan of the CPU, but nothing noticeable."

"CPU PLL Voltage: Sets the voltage for the internal phase locked loop. The role of the PLL is to ensure that the output clock of the internal processor frequency synthesizers maintains phase coherency with the reference clock signal (supplied from a clock generator located within the PCH). "

Thanks for any help;

Simple instructions for freezing a Skylake Processor.

The people at the community over at http://www.mersenneforum.org have found what appears to be a bug in the new Skylake architecture that can freeze any system that has a Skylake processor.

The Mersenne community are a bunch of mathematicians and other folks that use Intel processors to find record prime numbers. They have found all the record prime numbers of the last 20 years.

The main website of the community is http://www.mersenne.org where they keep track of all progress in searching for a new record prime number.

Owners of Skylake systems have found out that the software package that they use to hunt for prime numbers will freeze their system if they use particular settings. Since this bug is reproducible and has been confirmed on motherboards of many different suppliers and with RAM modules of different suppliers the bug seems to be tied to the processor architecture. The bug is reproducible under Windows and Linux.

This software works perfectly normal on all other Intel processors of past generations.

Steps to freeze your Skylake system:

- Download and install Prime95 for Windows on a Skylake system from the website at http://www.mersenne.org/download/

(If you want to familiarize yourself with the software use the readme, a background in math will be helpful, but is not needed.)

- In the menu go to 'Advanced | Test' and fill in the number 14942209 in the box labeled 'Exponent to test'

- Let the program run for some time and at some point, minutes or hours, the system will freeze.

The prime95 software does multiplications of extreme high numbers using the Fast Fourier Transformation. The implementation of these FFT's in prime95 is handcoded in assembly by George Woltman, and is the most efficient implementation available. This project runs for more than 20 years now and has always been carefully maintained. Tens of thousands of machines run this software 24 hours a day.

For optimization, different FFT sizes have been implemented in Prime95, only the FFT with length 768K freezes the Skylake.

It is my fear that like the infamous FDIV bug this issue will require a new stepping and a product recall, since this has security implications as well.

If you have a Skylake system I invite you to try out the steps above. Please post your findings here and in the mersenneforum at http://mersenneforum.org/showthread.php?t=20714

intel i9 - socket 2066 vs socket 2011v3

Hello! Yesterday we (consurmes) saw the confirmation of future lauch of intel i9 processors. This information was gotten from a lot of sites on the web. Some specs let me down. Is intel really launching i9 processors with socket 2066? It's kind of frustating because many people, mainly enthusiatics, just bought processors with socket 2011v3 like i7 6800 to i7 6950. It means, again and again and again and again  and again and forever again, the need of changing the motherboard. I think Intel only have consurmers at USA, where its processors are cheaper than others countries.

In Brazil, we have to pay 70% of taxes from importing products. Also, the importer puts 30% of margin. It ends to double the value.

intel i7 7700 температура...

Буквально с пару недель как собрал новый компьютер:

Процессор: Intel Core i7-7700 kaby lake

Материнская Плата: Fatal1ty B250M Performance

Оперативная память: 2 х Kingston HyperX KHX2133C14/8G

Видеокарта: Asus ROG STRIX 1080

Блок питания: 650ВТ 80+gold. chieftec a-90

HDD: WDC WD1003FZEX-00K3CA0

SSD: INTEL SSDSC2CT180A4, INTEL SSDSCKJW120H6

i7 7700hq Kaby Lake Overheating Issue Under Heavy Load on a Gaming Laptop

Hi,

My CPU temps reach up to 90 C and hovers between 85-90 C under heavy load on a gaming laptop. I know TJ Max is 100 C but I feel worried for the long-term use of the processor. I don't think my cpu temps are in the safe zone. Is there any known compatibility issues of Kaby Lake with Windows 10? Should I be worried with my temps?

Thanks and best regards,

Harun
